The Responsibilities Of A Safety Coordinator

By Nora Jennings

To ensure that the company remains profitable, it is important to minimize expenditure in the form of direct costs paid to workers as compensation. These direct compensation costs include medical, rehabilitation, property damage and damages among others. Therefore, companies are advised to hire a safety coordinator to manage activities intended to reduce risks. The experts are mandated to control accidents and reduce injury related costs in that company.

These experts have several responsibilities to play in a company. They are the policy developers in terms of ensuring protection of the employer, the company properties and employees of the firm. They design clear roles for managers, supervisors and staffs on what to do to prevent accidents. The policies take into account important aspects such as hazard reporting, accident investigation and primary security precautions to name but a few. Wide consultation must be made with employees, managers and supervisors when developing these policies.

Whenever accidents occur within the workplace, it is the responsibility of the protection expert to conduct investigations. The investigations try to unravel the causes of such accidents. In addition, these investigations are aimed at establishing whether due diligence was followed on safety rules and regulations. Once the investigation has been concluded, the findings are tabled, and further tangible plans are made to avert future accidents in the workplace.

Moreover, these experts are mandated to conduct protection training to employees in a company. The training should cover aspects such as fire protection, hazardous evacuation and fire prevention plans among others. Once these experts have completed training these staffs, they ensure that they ascertain that each employee has completed the requirements. Ideally, they may conduct reviews and post training tests to ascertain positive feedback from the trainees.

Routine inspections are an important aspect to ensure that workplaces remain secure. These experts are mandated to carry out regular inspections to identify hazardous situations within the workplace that could be corrected. The expert usually checks exit doors to ensure that they are not blocked or locked to allow free flow of people in cases of emergencies. They also ensure that fire extinguishers are accessible by employees and are well stocked all times.

Furthermore, it is the responsibility of the protection coordinator in the company to ensure that the protection plan is implemented. The plan usually contains significant information that directs how health and protection activities must be coordinated. This aims at protecting employees and property at the working place.

Furthermore, these experts are required to ensure those accident incidences are well recorded. Specific forms must be filled for cases of illnesses and injuries that have occurred while working hours. The recording procedure must comply with that of the occupational and health administration.

Therefore, the importance of these experts in a company cannot be overstated. Companies that intend to recruit these professional should advertise this position and conduct interviews. Interviews help these firms to employ competent experts thus ensuring that there is safety in the workplace.
