Several Uses For 3D Printing Equipment

By Philip Smith

Commercial 3D printing equipment has been available and used in manufacturing and engineering for a number of years. Historically, the process was slow, expensive and was not always considered to be the best financial option for use in engineering and design projects. Significant developments in the printer technology and a reduction in costs have seen a huge demand for this type of equipment.

Companies can spend anything from a few thousand dollars to millions of dollars on research and development of new products each year. It can take months or often several years to come up with a working model of a new product. The design and prototype stage can be completed much quicker with computer design software linked to a 3D printer.

There has been a noticeable increase in the use of 3D by the fashion and fabric industries in recent years. Stores and retail outlets provide a service to customers in which they can choose to have items of clothing and other goods personalized. Many items can be customized using the buyers name, slogan or sometimes a photograph printed onto the garment or other personalized item.

The medical sector relies heavily on the use of 3D imaging and printer equipment to produce x-rays and scans. Whereas x-rays produce a picture of a specific area of the body, a scan can produce a much more detailed 3D image. Scan can usually provide the physician with a much clearer and detailed view of the problem area.

For many years architects have produced miniature models of their building projects. They now use 3D equipment and computer software to produce a model. The process is quick and changes can quickly be incorporated into the design.

Members of the legal profession and police often utilize 3D equipment to help them reconstruct a crime scene. They can use a 3D model to run through various scenarios that will help them to reach a conclusion as to the events. In cases where a victims face is damaged cannot be identified, it is possible to come up with a reconstructed face based on the remains of the head.

The equipment used for 3D prints may still be out-with the budget level of most individuals. Developments in technology and an ever growing demand will eventually result in a drop in the prices. When that happens they will become a more cost effective option for the majority of home users.
