Cryo Services-How Does It Work?

By Luisa Sharpe

There are quite a number of methods that can be used to treat diseases, abnormal or damaged body tissue. One of these methods is the application of cryo services. This is whereby cold temperature is applied to reduce inflammation and pain, as well as reduce metabolism or completely get rid of the diseased area.

Abnormal cells that are sometimes found on the cervix can easily be destroyed using a procedure known as cryosurgery. A malignancy or cervical cancer can be the eventual outcome if these cells are not removed in advance. Biopsy samples are usually taken from a small part of the cervix to identify the extent of the disease before the procedure can be recommended by a doctor.

The cryosurgery procedure involves the insertion of a specialized instrument into the vaginal canal and is firmly placed against the cervix. Once the instrument completely covers the cervix with the abnormal cells, liquid nitrogen is let out to flow through the instrument at a temperature of -50 degrees Celsius.

The abnormal cells are destroyed slowly by the low temperature after which the cell are left to slough off slowly in about two to three weeks. The cervix is left to freeze for three more minutes before the procedure is completed. It is then left to thaw after which the whole procedure is repeated for an additional three minutes.

You may feel some pains in the lower part of the abdomen during the initial process as a result of the cervix being exposed to subnormal temperatures. The pain may be felt worse than the pain experienced during menstruation. However, the pain will soon disappear after a few hours following the procedure. As the procedure nears its completion, the pain will slowly reduce as the cervix adjusts to the subnormal temperature.

The body system should be left to relax for the rest of the day after cryosurgery is performed. After at least 24 hours from the surgery, regular activities can be resumed as usual. Some women may experience an increase in the amount of vaginal discharge. To avoid any more side effects, no item should be inserted into the vagina until two to three weeks have elapsed.

The insertions of tampons, sexual intercourse as well as douching are all activities that should be avoided during the two to three week recovery period. Cryosurgery can be considered as a fairly effective procedure that helps in killing and getting rid of the abnormal cervical tissue that is affected by disease especially when they are in the lower region of the cervix. In at least 85% of the cases in which cryosurgery is applied to get rid of the cells, the outcome is successful.

Cryosurgery carries along its own dangers just as any other medical procedure. The dangers associated with the procedure are however very little. It is essential that you are taken through the risks and side effects of the procedure before considering it. Some side effects that may arise after the procedure are like fever, pain, foul smell, a discharge that is yellow in color and vaginal bleeding that is unrelated to the monthly flow. In case of any serious complications that may be of concern, it is highly recommended that you contact the doctor as soon as possible.
