Facts About Polyethylene Terephthalate

By Lenna Stockwell

Polyethylene terephthalate may sound unfamiliar to many people but when you discover the things produced out of this thermoplastic polymer you are likely to recognize them. Basic information about this particular plastic can be uncovered if you really want to learn about it.

PET is actually a type of polyester and the most common type of polymer in the polyester family. This is a type of thermoplastic, which is a polymer that you can mold once it is heated to a specific temperature. There are many types of thermoplastic and many are used to create custom thermoplastic packaging for a variety of uses, such as retail product packaging, custom food packaging and other types of custom product packaging.

Primarily, PET or PETE, as what polyethylene is commonly known to be, is used to create containers for food, beverages and other kinds of liquids. Several of the water bottles or soda bottles are created from PET. It was eyed by companies because of its water-resistant capability thus enabling the containment of liquid. Being lightweight allows for less expensive transportation too.

PET is also found to create products like the sails in sailboats but for this product it is often called by the brand name Dacron. This then gives birth to the manufacture of all kinds of polyester clothing. Even when the processing of the polymers differs according to what the products to be produced require of, both water bottles and a piece of clothing can be made from polyethylene terephthalate.

Yes, thermoplastics are most often recyclable and the most commonly accepted of them are PET bottles. The resin code 1 or 01 is what identifies them. It's also true that the majority of the recycling centers around the United States accept bottles and containers with this particular resin code and some offer to refund a deposit if you recycle your bottles.

Upon entering them into the recycling process PET bottles are being chopped up into flakes where from being flakes then they are reduced into really small pellets. Polyester threads can then be made out of this which is consequently used for making fabric and carpeting. Strapping, new bottles and some more plastic products we use are made from recycled PET.
